Carolyn,
It is agreed that there is an immediate need to gain more information in the area of nanotoxicology. The lack of data currently limits our ability to determine why or how the toxic potential of nanomaterials may differ significantly from the material in a bulk or molecular form. I do not believe that generalizations will be readily available anytime soon. So the strategy now should be to try to incorporate materials testing strategies early on in research and development of new nanotechnologies. Nanotechnology offers us, for the first time, the ability to alter chemistries of materials very precisely so toxicity could be 'designed out' of products. I think with innovation and the willing scientific community trying to address these issues, that real progress will be made in this field.
