COMMENT: Particles in Cosmetics
Submitted by Amy Rose on 10/23/07 6:30 AM
Hello Robert:
While it is true that cosmetics have contained particles for many years (many of them hazardous), the long-term effects of applying these products to our skin has not yet been quantified. (I personally deal with this by wearing VERY little make-up.) My concern with nano-particles is that their properties are substantially different at the nano-level than at the macro-molecular level. There are substances that are perfectly stable or safe in macro-form that become highly volatile or toxic at the nano-level. I would like A) better testing to know precisely which nano-particles fall into this category and B) clear, conspicuous labeling so that I know to avoid products with these particles (and parents can avoid them for their children - particularly sunscreen).
