FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice Requirements

COMMENT: Cyber home schools as an answer for poor children?

Submitted by Frank Heller, MPA on 10/12/04 9:35 AM

Transportation is a cost problem for the poor, esp. with today's oil price of $56/barrel.

Having installed global classrooms (Mascoma Valley, Lubec, etc.) to enhance learning for a number of rural and 'deprived' schools; there are limits to what one can bring into them. All too often, the virtual school is designed for the students tracked into liberal arts colleges, i.e. upper SEIS backgrounds.

What is your experience with these cyber schools in overcoming equity issues?

...I tried to resurrect the concept of the LIGHTSHIP School of the 30's-50's that plied Maine's many islands bringing educational resources to their schools, by combining distance learning with a visiting ship that would bring educators to the island on a weekly basis; alas, the Island Institute didn't want to fund it.
