FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice RequirementsCOMMENT: Communicating to Parents About ChoicesSubmitted by Jane Cunningham on 10/12/04 9:26 AM I agree with Susan. She pointed out at least one reason parents are not taking advantage of the choices they have. Across the country we have found that some traditional public school personnel purposely do not inform parents of their choices or erect barriers to that choice. For example, some schools will send a required letter to parents that is so confusing or long, they cannot understand their options. I have seen letters that start out something like, "We are proud to let you know that your child's school has been designated as a school of choice" or something similar. School Districts also provide supplemental services/tutoring easily accessible in the school, but do not allow private providers to use the school building therefore limiting those choices to parents. I agree with Paul Hill's presentation. Choice is here. We can't keep burying our heads in the sand. We need to do it right and in the best interest of the public at large, not just the institution.
