FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice Requirements

COMMENT: Maine's Democratic regime has rejected cooperation w/NCLB

Submitted by Frank Heller, MPA on 10/12/04 7:48 AM

It is patently obvious that the Democratic regime which has run the public schools in Maine for nearly 30 years has done everything it can to resist NCLB's implementation, despite its dismal record in educating poor children---most either drop out or fail the MEA's or NAEP's by 11th grade. This was dramatically documented by Mike Sentance, the regional USDOE rep. to MDOE this spring---and largely, ignored by the Democratic legislature which gave the MDOE a green light to resist implementing NCLB.

The Bangor Daily News in an editorial published on October 1, 2004 stated that "Sens. Collins and Olympia Snowe have formed a task force of two dozen educators from around the state to provide further obstacles to meeting NCLB; it is expected to offer its conclusions sometime this winter".

...just what the poor children of Maine need; more obstacles to NCLB from Maine's supposedly Republican Senators!<sarcasm=off>
