FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice Requirements

COMMENT: A Broader View

I have read many of your replys and though they are all valuable with many good ideas, I have one concern. What happened to community schools? A place where communities meet and took pride in what they have. Why do we continue to move students around when maybe all they need is place to close to home and close to heart. I work at a school where students attend from up to 35 minutes (that's car minutes, not bus minutes away). The students bused from the farthest are from low income housing. Our particular school is overcrowded (built for 800, currently housing 1,400, sound familar). As the district looks for land for a new school they neglect to look where it is most needed. 5 miles down the road from the current school does not help parents with no car to take pride in their schools. It does not help parents be role models for the value of school when they cannot get or afford to get (anyone checked gas prices recently) to school functions, conferences, etc...

I ask you when do we stop trying to find the cure on the other side of the pasture and create the school right next to the barn. Let's stop shipping and start creating schools where students attend in their area so the students and parents at the bottom of the AYP can take pride in their school, their area and their future. Those with a limited view often do not seek out a broader view, let's start educating our communities again. Better schools come from community pride and support, money helps, but people make the difference!
