FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice Requirements

COMMENT: Some revealing virtual school stats

Submitted by Mickey Revenaugh on 10/12/04 6:02 PM

What an intriguing discussion about virtual and "cyber" schools for disadvantaged populations...Connections Academy (the company I work for) services virtual K-8 public schools in 7 states. This year, 39% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and 39% live in rural areas.

More than half the students in our schools come from traditional public schools, not homeschooling -- so this "virtual public school at home" is a pretty radical choice for their families, one that they make because their students' specific learning needs aren't otherwise being met.

We are now looking seriously at community-based virtual school models and "schools within schools" to serve kids who can't take advantage of the virtual alternative at home...virtual schools really can be an effective choice option with the right framework by states and districts.
