FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice Requirements

COMMENT: Virtual Schools CAN help meet some of the needs of students

Submitted by Debra Hamel-Kearney on 10/12/04 3:41 PM

I have visited a virtual 'high school', which is located in an extremely rural school district in New Hampshire. What I saw were children taking classes online that they would NEVER have had the opportunity to even explore in their high school setting. There was one child doing a photography course, using the digital camera and sending her images electronically. There was a student that was following a great explorer through all he went through. There was a class on DNA.

What a wonderful opportunity for students to at least delve into something that they have an interest in, it might spark a passion, it will definitely peak their interest, and if you can show the student that you at least try to provide something that is of personal interest to them, a way in which they can learn - that is interesting and motivating to them -- but structured, you've got them. And that's what we want, lifelong learners.

Students, Children and Adults do not all learn the same way, you never know what might happen - until you offer it. Virtual classroom is one great answer if done correctly - think of the transportation savings!!!
