FOCUS POINT: NCLB Public School Choice RequirementsCOMMENT: Can virtual schools help meet the capacity challenges of the NCLB choice requirements?Submitted by Michelle Godard Terrell on 10/12/04 2:43 PM At the request of the US Department of Education this summer, school choice expert Bryan Hassel and I explored how virtual schools have the potential to be a powerful innovation for meeting the choice provisions of the NCLB Act. The Act intends for virtual schools to be an acceptable, legal option for districts and states seeking to increase their capacity. Our brief cites research that suggests virtual charter schools are able to provide a solid education to children who have been historically under-served by traditional school environments and programs. (Our paper can be accessed at http://www.nclbtechsummits.org/summit2/presentations/Hassel-Terrell...) Do participants believe that there is a role for virtual schools to play?
